Dear New Member

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Hertfordshire Independent Advisory Group (IAG). The purpose of this Induction Pack is to provide you with all the information and documents necessary to assist you in your role as an IAG member.

Following the tragic death of Stephen Lawrence and the subsequent Inquiry in 1999, Sir William Macpherson concluded that there had been a “…collective failure of [the Metropolitan Police Service] to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture or ethnic origin”. As a result, one of the 70 recommendations he made was the creation of Independent Advisory Groups.

Hertfordshire IAG was established in 2004. We are an independent group of members from different diverse communities. We work jointly together to advise the Police on cultural issues, to ensure safety and justice for all under represented communities living and working within Hertfordshire. To date Hertfordshire IAG is proud to have played an important part in advising the Constabulary on a number of critical incidents that potentially may have impacted on minority communities, including the 7/7 bombings in London, the screening of the Secret Policeman documentary, and Operation Mile which dealt with the alleged racist emails.

The Group also works in collaboration with the Police to increase trust and confidence for all of the communities in Hertfordshire, and in particular amongst those from the minority and vulnerable groups such as Disabilities, Age, Gender, Race, Faith and Sexual Orientation.

As a member of Hertfordshire IAG you may be called to give advice over the phone, you will attend several meetings per year, some of which may deal with specific issues in your community, give advice on policies and training, and on some occasions come to a Police station to give face to face advice on Operations or Incidents.
