ROLE PROFILE

March 2008

Hertfordshire IAG members provide advice, guidance and constructive feedback to Hertfordshire Constabulary. IAG members advise on both internal processes within Hertfordshire Constabulary, and on external service delivery.

The primary role of an IAG member is to provide advice, without prejudice or obligation, on any or all of the matters listed below under External Service Delivery. Hertfordshire Constabulary may seek advice on matters listed below under Internal Processes.

All advice and help provided to Hertfordshire Constabulary is without prejudice or obligation.



EXTERNAL SERVICE DELIVERY

IAG members may provide advice on the following aspects of external service delivery:

• The handling and resolution of critical incidents, providing advice to:

- Incident Commanders at ‘Gold’ and ‘Silver’ levels
- Senior Investigating Officers dealing with major crime investigations
- Family Liaison Officers involved in supporting those affected by serious trauma

• To assist the Constabulary in improving the trust and confidence of Hertfordshire’s diverse community in their Police service by providing:

- Advice to Corporate Communications on dealing with the media in relation to high impact issues
- Advice on community engagement and consultation methods
- Advice on how policing services may be, or are being perceived by communities

• To advise on the investigation and prevention of Hate Crime



INTERNAL PROCESSES

Hertfordshire IAG members play a valued role in creating and maintaining an anti-discriminatory Police service. IAG members may be asked to provide advice on the following areas:

• Training:

- Provide advice on all aspects of staff training, focussing on potential community impact, equality and diversity
- To attend training sessions when appropriate and critically appraise them

• Human Resources:

- To advise on recruitment, retention and promotion, and selection processes

• Policy Review:

- Advise on force policies, looking specifically at community impact, diversity, and human rights issues

• Service Delivery:

- To advise on call management/resource handling issues, including the control room and crime bureau functions



KEY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

These are the key knowledge and skills that you will need to enable you to carry out the role of Independent Advisory Group member.

It is important for you to be able to:

• Express and explain you own views to others
• Listen and consider other people’s views
• Question and challenge the views of others in a constructive way
• Consider your own biases and prejudices
• Speak on your own behalf, rather than as a group representative
• Work as part of a team and contribute to the success of a group initiative
• Work with people from all areas of Hertfordshire
• Work with people from diverse backgrounds
• Work with people with and without disabilities
• Work with people from a variety of faiths and cultures
• Work with people who may be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender
• Work as part of a team
• Make a contribution to influence policing strategy, policy and training
• Contribute the time, energy and commitment to attend regular meetings

It would also be useful if you have an interest in:

• Policing issues and current affairs, specifically in respect of the ways in which they affect the people in Hertfordshire
• Challenging and combating institutional discrimination
• How Hate Crime incidents should be handled
• The issues associated with recruiting, promoting and retaining staff from under represented groups
• How Police Officers and Police Staff should be trained
